About Us

boomer1Abandoned in the streets of Kansas City, KS after suffering a trauma to his spine, Boomer was picked up by KCK Animal Services and brought to The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City for care. He was able to pull himself up for moments, but he'd been getting around by dragging his wounded and callused back legs. Surgery would not help Boomer's condition. However, this incredibly sweet-natured and loving Pit Bull puppy was determined to walk, and our dedicated staff and Boomer's foster family were determined to make that possible. With months of medication, physical therapy including a water treadmill, and acupuncture Boomer has learned to walk again. He still uses a cart for longer walks -- and for zipping around at turbo speed! But his progress has been amazing. In October, after a year with us, Boomer made the journey to be with his new family in Washington State. He's now running on the sandy beaches, playing with his canine buddies and snuggling with his wonderful family.

Boomer's journey is just one example of what we can accomplish with your help. The care we provide for homeless pets is very costly, and 2017 has been an especially rough year. We've seen an enormous increase in the number of dogs with parvo virus. It's been a year of broken bones, life-saving surgeries, hundreds of abandoned sick kittens, and neglected and abused pets needing care. And a year of helping Boomer to walk again.

Please consider making a donation this holiday season. If you'd like to schedule a tour to learn more about us and the services we provide, contact Kate Fields at 913.596.1000 ext. 101 or email.
