Spotlight:
Leah Griffith
Leah Griffith has
always been a natural when it comes to working with animals.
Having grown up on a farm in Emporia, Kansas, Leah has been surrounded
by animals since she was very young. This love of animals eventually
lead her to pursue a career helping them as a certified veterinary
technician.
Leah found her way to the HSGKC through Dr.
Michelle Taylor, HSGKC vet. Dr. Taylor helped arrange
for her internship to be completed at the shelter in the summer
of 2006. Leah did such a wonderful job during her internship,
that she was offered a full time vet tech position after she
graduated in 2007.
Leah says she truly loves her job, and says her favorite part
of it is being able to help create a happy ending for animals
in need. She really enjoys seeing the lives of animals turn around,
especially for the ones that have had a hard life prior to coming
to the HSGKC. Leah also enjoys educating people on how to properly
care for their pets.
Leah recently bought a house with her husband in Paola, Kansas.
They both work near Kansas City, so they can commute together.
Leah says she loves her job so much; the hour drive is definitely
worth it. They have three dogs, one foster dog and two cats.
One of Leah’s dogs, Cookie,
was adopted from the HSGKC.

Volunteers can now take a load off
while playing with the pups in the shelter yards. Volunteer Floyd
Rogers has been busy installing beautiful cement benches in the
dog yards and also in the front yards for our clients to enjoy.
Do you have any special skills or talents? Whatever your skills
may be we can put them to use here at the HSGKC. Contact Jo if
you are interested in putting your talents to use for a good
cause!

Art Unleashed
Volunteers Needed
Art Unleashed is fast approaching,
and we are in search of some friendly and
out-going volunteers for this funky fundraiser. Volunteers who
would be interested in serving food or being art monitors for
the auction would be greatly appreciated.
Volunteers should keep in mind that there may be a little heavy
lifting involved.
Also, don’t forget that the date for
Art Unleashed was moved back to August
22nd. Anyone interested
in volunteering should contact Jo at (913) 596-1000 x 22.
Honor a Special Pet or Friend
We are placing one more order for engraved
bricks before we cement them into the memorial walkway
at the shelter this fall. Engraved bricks are only $50.
You may download the form or
call Jo directly
to arrange for your brick order.
Animal Welfare on the Silver Screen
Grab some friends and go see All
Roads Lead to Home when it comes out in late September. Not
only was this movie filmed right here in Kansas City, but it
also touches on many animal welfare issues. Although it is
a fictional film based around a family trying to cope with
loss, it also brings attention to no kill sheltering, puppy
mills and tainted pet food. This film also shows many animal
welfare professionals in a very positive light, looking towards
a possible brighter future for all pets.
Watch for more information in future
CyberTails about the movie premiere and
events surrounding this important and heartwarming movie.
Item of the Month:
Fleece Blankets
Do you have any spare fleece
blankets you could spare? Our vet clinic is in need
of some new or used fleece towels. If you have any extra at
home or could pick some up next time you are at the store,
it would be greatly appreciated!
For a list of other items and services
we need, check out our Sit
Up and Beg Wish List.
Upcoming Volunteer Orientation

9th from 10 am to noon. Make sure to tell anyone who
might be interested. All interested volunteers should fill
out a volunteer
