Volunteer
Profile:
Karen Klein
Karen
Klein started volunteering at the shelter after her friend and
HSGKC board member, Eva Allen, told her of the many opportunities
available. She has been volunteering since last June. Here at
the shelter, you will most likely find Karen working with the
dogs. She finds her work helping to socialize the dogs very rewarding.
When she is not volunteering Karen might be playing
the violin. She is a professional violinist and a member of the
Kansas City Symphony. She also performs at various locations
around Kansas City, including churches, nursing homes, and recitals.
In addition to performing, she also teaches lessons to students.
Karen recently returned from a vacation in New York. She has
family that lives on Long Island and tries to visit them at least
twice a year. Her hobbies include reading-- especially books
about dogs, watching movies and spending time with her golden
retriever, Dodgie.
She adopted Dodgie from a rescue about three years ago.
Karen and Eva usually volunteer together. “Because of
Eva, I have met a lot of very nice people at the shelter,” says
Karen. So if you know anyone who would love to volunteer with
animals or meet new people, talk to them about the Humane Society.
You never know who might discover a hidden passion.

Jamie Wempel organized
her own fundraiser, selling hot dog lunches outside the Wyandotte
County Courthouse, on June 20. The event raised $950 in
only three hours! Thank you for your hard work, Jamie. Looking
back, she says that the event was so much easier than she thought
it would be.
If you are
interested in organizing your own fundraising event for the Humane Society, let us know
and we’ll try
to help.
This fall our front memorial
walkway will be extended. We are making one more order of bricks before
we cement them into the walkway. A brick with up to four lines
of text is only $50. If you are interested in purchasing a brick,
download the form or call Jo at 913-596-1000 x 22 to place your
order today.

Art Unleashed is
coming up fast. This fun event will be Friday August 22. We need
volunteers to help set up the event on Thursday, August 21 from
12-5pm or Friday, August 22 from 10am-5pm. We are also still
looking for outgoing volunteers to help monitor the art tables
and serve food during the event. The volunteer shift is 5:15-9:15pm.
Volunteers should keep in mind that there may be some heavy lifting
at this event. Anyone interested in volunteering should email Jo or
call (913) 596-1000 x 22.
If you would
prefer to attend Art Unleashed as a guest, tickets
are now on sale online at www.artunleashedkc.org for
$25 or they can be purchased at the event for $35.
Do you know any artists that may want
to create something for the auction? Email Janet
Hines, Art Unleashed co-chairperson,
for art donation information. All donated pieces need to be original
or limited edition and pet-themed.
Many people came to wash their dogs
for the discounted price of $5 at the fourth annual Suds of Fun
event at U-Wash Puppy in Lenexa. Katie
DiPasquale, HSGKC intern and Suds of Fun organizer, felt
pretty good about the turnout. The event raised $510 for
the Humane Society’s animals, which was an increase from
last year. Hopefully we can raise even more next year. Special
thanks to Pat Hurley, U-Wash Puppy owner, who
hosted the event and donated all the dog wash supplies. We couldn’t
hold Suds of Fun without his support.
Are You Done
with That?
Newspapers Needed!
We use a lot of newspaper here at
the shelter to keep the dogs’ cages clean. Now we are in
short supply. If you have any stacks of
newspaper just lying around your house, we’d be
glad to take them and put them to good use.
We also need
dog collar and leash sets in sizes small, medium, and large. When
one of our dogs is adopted, we give them a matching collar
and leash to wear home.
For a list of other items and services
we need, check out our Sit
Up and Beg Wish List.
We had a packed house at the July
HSGKC volunteer orientation class. Please join us in welcoming
them! Nick Marion, Elaina Smith, Marisa
Smith, Laura Smith, Jeff Graves, Robin Harris,
Hunter Harris, Drake Taylor, Asia Guthrie, Stephanie Watts, Alex
Barber, Joey Edminster, Angela Chiang, Kayla Barnes, Tara Jackson,
Sandra Llewellyn, and Kim Livingston. Many of these volunteers
found us through the referral of seasoned volunteers! Thank you! |
