Spotlight:
Nancy Gibson,
HSGKC Receptionist
|
Nancy,
and her helper "Princess", are here to help people and
their pets in our reception area |
Like many humane society staffers,
Nancy Gibson’s love of animals began at a young age. She
grew up on a 15 acre farm that had a variety of animals including
dogs, cats, cows, horses and rabbits. As a young girl she remembers
begging her parents for horse. Eventually they granted her wish
and gave her a pony named Smokey. Smokey was her favorite pet
as girl. “Most people don’t think horses are affectionate,
but Smokey was very affectionate. He was just perfect,” Nancy
said. Today, Nancy has seven rescued cats of her own.
Before coming to the HSGKC as a receptionist, Nancy volunteered
with Leavenworth Animal Control. They kept her busy with bathing,
walking and vetting the pets, among other duties.
Nancy is married and lives in Lansing, Kansas. As an Army wife, she has moved
seven times during her 18-year marriage, including places like Hawaii and Germany.
She has three children: Thomas, Jason and Kaitlin. Thomas is in the coast Guard,
Jason is attending Pitt State, and Kaitlin will be a senior in high school.
Nancy says she loves working with the HSGKC. She fields about 40 calls a day
from people wanting to surrender their pets to the shelter for various reasons.
She loves being a resource and problem solver for these pet owners. Helping these
people be able to continue their care of their pets through her work is especially
rewarding.
