Volunteer
Spotlight:
Jessica Walker
All it took was one night
of the HSGKC’s pet telethon to get local real estate agent, Jessica
Walker, hooked on helping
homeless animals! Jessica knew she didn’t have enough room
to adopt any more animals since she already had four cats at
home, but she still really wanted to help. After making her first
donation and learning about the Sponsor-A-Pet
Program, Jessica
decided to spend some time with our shelter pets awaiting their
adoption.
“What better way to share my love for animals but being
around the ones that do not have happy forever homes yet,” Jessica
said.
Jessica can often be found
playing in our cat rooms or helping out with office work. She
attends nearly every event the HSGKC puts on and truly enjoys
the “unexplainable feeling of
fulfillment and sense of purpose [that comes from] helping the
ones that can’t help themselves.”
Jessica even helped organize
the First Friday event at The
Urban Living Center on Friday,
June 5. It was a fun and interactive event for art lovers to
meet our adoptable animals while enjoying complimentary food
and drinks. Jessica is currently serving on the art sub-committee
for Art Unleashed. She’s excited
to be a part of this annual event that marries her love of animals
with her love of art.
Come by the shelter and get to know Jessica. We love having
her around, and because of all of her wonderful work at the Humane
Society, we wanted to put her in the volunteer spotlight this
week! Thanks for all of your time and effort towards helping
the animals, Jessica!

Item of the
Week:
Baby Pools
We are in need of baby
pools this week. These baby pools will be used at Dog-n-Jog so
we need as many as possible. Any size pool would be greatly
appreciated!
For
a list of other items and services we need, please check out
our Sit Up and
Beg Wish List. All of these items go to helping our cause
become more successful and our animals’ lives become
more enjoyable.

Satellite Adoption Events
The month
of May was very busy with
several satellite adoption events. Thank
you to all of the volunteers who made them possible. If
you'd like to help with any upcoming satellites, check
our satellite
adoption page for dates and locations. Contact Jana if

Make sure you sign up for
Dog-n-Jog. Our 1 or 2 mile walk/run
on The
Country Club Plaza will be held Sunday,
June 14 from 7am to 10:30 am. Register
online for $25 until June
13 and $35 on June 14.
You can also create
a personalized fund raising page and when
you reach $50 or more in donations, you’ll receive one
Dog-n-Jog entry and a special Humane Society umbrella. The
top three pledge collectors have a chance to win
two round-trip tickets on Air Tran Airways! Thanks to Banfield
Pet Hospital and PetSmart, we have a wonderful opportunity to raise money
and awareness for our cause. Get registered today!

The
Humane Society is participating
in a contest put on by Petfinder.com and The
Animal Rescue Site. Because our
shelter uses petfinder.com to display our animals, we are eligible
for this contest and have the opportunity to win
weekly $1,000 awards,
or maybe even more! Currently,
we are ranked 6th out of 129 shelters in Kansas and 145th out
of 7,800 shelters in the nation.
All
we need is for YOU to VOTE
DAILY on our website: www.hsgkc.org and
click on the box that says “VOTE!” You
can vote once a day, every day. The key is to remember to VOTE
FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY (located in KS).
Tell
your friends! The more votes we
get the better our chances are.
Bertha
I know several of you were able to stop by
VSEC and give Bertha your wishes. I know she enjoyed the visitors.
Our shelter cats are so lucky to have such caring people in their
lives. A few volunteers have contributed to a memorial fund in
her honor. If you’d like to be a part of please contact Jo.
Bertha’s passing has smiled upon us with wonderful adoptions
this past week. So, bittersweet. |
