Kansas City Area Animal Rescue
Groups
There are many people in our area who are dedicated
to helping a particular breed of dog or cat or other types of critters.
Our humane society and many other area shelters network with these
groups in order to be able to help more of the animals who come through
our doors. Most of these people foster animals in their homes
until they can find them a new home. Contact them to adopt a pet or to
learn more about a particular breed or type of pet.
Notice to Rescue Groups: Please email us
or call 913.596.1000
ext. 13 to update your contact information, or to add your web address
to your listing. We would like to include more web links. Also contact
us if your group is not on our list and you'd like to be considered.
Dog Rescue Groups
These rescue groups have dogs available for adoption,
pure breeds and mixed. Many are in foster homes and photos are posted
on their web sites. For a specific breed also check the breed list below.
These groups have small dogs available for adoption,
pure breeds and mixed. Most are in foster homes and photos are posted
on their web sites. For a specific breed also check the breed list below.
These groups and individuals specialize in rescuing
certain breeds. Some also rescue mixes of that breed. Most dogs
for adoption will be in foster homes. Breed rescuers are a good
source of information to learn about that breed.
We'd like to include more web site links, so if
you're a rescuer listed below and have a web site please email us
with the link.
Petfinder is
a web site provided by the ASPCA. It is an excellent resource to
help people find a pet. It contains a comprehensive listing of animals
available for adoption from shelters and rescue groups, with photos
and descriptions. Use the search engine to find a specific breed or
type of pet. Many shelters, humane societies and rescue groups in the
Kansas City area post their available pets on this web site-- including The
Humane Society of Greater KC!
Pet
Harbor is another good web site with a searchable
database for finding pets who need homes.

Veterinarians
There are MANY wonderful veterinarians in the greater Kansas City
area. These are a few who we call when we need more care for one of
our shelter pets than we can provide in our limited clinic. They've
all donated services to our animals. There are other area vets
who help other shelters and rescue groups. For other references, we
suggest asking friends and co-workers who they take their pets to.

Obedience Classes for Dogs A Trained Dog is a Happy Dog
The Humane Society highly recommends that
you take your dog to obedience classes. Classes
should be reward-based and fun for you and your dog-- this is an opportunity
for you and your dog to bond. Not only will you and your dog learn
a lot but it's also a great way to socialize your dog with
people and other dogs. Puppies can start as early as 4 months of age.
We've provided this list as a service to the community
and to give you a place to start, but we cannot make endorsements.
Before working with any trainer we recommend asking for their qualifications
and/or references. You can also ask the instructor if you can observe
a class before signing up to make sure it's a good match for you and
your dog. Ask your veterinarian or "doggy friends" for
their recommendations.
