No-Kill Shelter

No-Kill Shelter

The Humane Society of Greater KC became a no-kill shelter in 1994. We care for those who are cast aside, forgotten, lost, sick or injured. Only pets with untreatable medical issues or extreme behavioral problems are euthanized and we have no time limits for how long a pet may stay. Pets are examined by one of our staff veterinarians upon arrival and treated for any medical problems they may have while at our shelter. Many of the pets in our shelter were originally at the KCK Animal Control shelter and were seriously sick or injured and needed immediate medical care. Through generous donations from animal lovers we are able to save the seriously sick and injured who otherwise would not have a chance.

Opened in 2000, our facility was designed with an emphasis on comfort and cleanliness for the dogs and cats waiting to find homes, and also to provide an accommodating environment for you to get to know our pets.

Windows and skylights let in sunshine. Most of our cats do not live in cages. They are free to lounge and play in rooms filled with cat furniture and toys. Our dogs have indoor/outdoor dog kennels with big play yards and an agility course yard. Our BEG program (Behavior Enrichment Group) enriches the physical well-being of our shelter dogs by providing mental health stimulation, exercise and training. BEG staff and volunteers improve our shelter dogs’ lives through agility and obedience training, pack walks, day trips, overnight stays, and more. These are just some of the ways we’ve made life better for our adoptable pets!
