The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City celebrates over 100 years of faithful service to the lost, abandoned, and broken pets of the Greater Kansas City area. Our mission is to save and improve the lives of dogs and cats throughout the Greater Kansas City community by providing preventative veterinary care and spay/neuter services, education and adoptions. In 1994 we became the first no-kill shelter in the KC area, taking in many pets who are sick or injured and need medical care. Our affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care clinic saves and improves the lives of thousands of animals every year. We provide much needed care and services for the animals in our community– our work is never done. We cannot accomplish what we do without you!
In the year 2000, after 40 years at our location on Minnesota Avenue, we relocated to our current facility at 5445 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, KS. Our building is 10,000 square feet and located on ten acres. The move allowed us to expand our services at the time. Sixteen years later, we find ourselves needing to expand even more to allow us to increase the services we provide and accommodate our growing need in the community.

Our Services
Veterinary & Spay/Neuter Services
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City provides affordable spay/neuter services and veterinary care services for the public. Our clinic helps people on a limited budget care for the veterinary needs of their pets, and saves lives by reducing pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering. Through individual client meetings, our vet staff also works with pet owners to educate them about proper and responsible pet care. By providing education and affordable services, we’re able to improve and save the lives of thousands of pets in the Greater KC community.
We are able to offer these services because our costs are subsidized by private donations from people like you!
Saving lives in Kansas City, KS
HSGKC’s veterinary staff provides medical exams, spay/neuter services, vaccinations, heartworm and FIV/Feline Leukemia tests, and other medical care for pets at the city shelter. Pets who are seriously sick or injured are transferred to us for more extensive lifesaving care and we take on those high costs. We then find loving homes for these wonderful and deserving pets.
Adoptions: Your best friend is waiting for you!
In 1994 we became the first no-kill shelter in Kansas City. Only pets with untreatable medical issues or extreme behavioral problems are euthanized and we have no time limits for how long a pet may stay. Pets are examined by one of our staff veterinarians upon arrival and treated for any medical problems they may have while at our shelter.
Through our conversation-based adoption program, we specialize in matching animals with your lifestyle as well as the needs of the animal. We are a walk-through shelter; adopters are welcome to come by any time and walk through our facility. Every animal that is adopted from our organization comes up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations and flea/tick/heartworm prevention, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. We do offer a seven day trial with all adoptions. Our main goal is to create a life-long bond with you and the animal you are adopting.
Humane Education
We believe education is the key to ending cruelty toward animals and creating a more compassionate community and one with no more homeless pets. Most dogs and cats in shelters are just like those pets living happy lives in people’s homes. The difference is that they did not have someone to give them love, responsible care and a lifetime commitment. All pets deserve a good home, and through education we can improve and save the lives of pets in our community.
In our Humane Education programs we teach the importance of compassion toward animals, responsible pet care including spaying and neutering, and how to be safe around pets. Presenters accompanied by a pet may be scheduled to come to your school, church or civic/community center. We also offer presentations and tours at our facility. Programs are usually offered Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5:30pm.
